VO2 Max Testing

Know the size of your aerobic engine.

Professional physiology testing for amateur athletes. Measure your maximal aerobic capacity — the ceiling on your endurance performance.

The test

What is VO2 Max — and why does it matter?

Your VO2 Max is your maximum rate of oxygen consumption. It tells you how efficiently you take in oxygen via your lungs.

Cycling is predominantly aerobic. The bigger your VO2 Max, the bigger your “aerobic engine” — and the more power you can put out sustainably. Lower VO2 Max means you tip into anaerobic work sooner, fatigue faster, and produce by-products more rapidly.

The bigger picture

VO2 Max alone isn’t the whole story

We always recommend combining VO2 Max with a Lactate Threshold Test. The closer your lactate threshold is to your VO2 Max, the better — you can hold a higher percentage of your engine without cooking yourself.

01

VO2 80 @ 60% LT

big engine, can’t use much of it

02

VO2 70 @ 80% LT

smaller engine, rides stronger for longer

train the engine and how you use it

Physiology testing at UK Bike Fit

Who it’s for

Built for amateur athletes

Most recreational athletes think “I’m not good enough for performance testing”. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Every hour of your training time is precious. Pros can ride 30+ hours a week — you train around work and family. Our testing targets that available time to your physiology, and our physiologist helps you turn the numbers into sessions you can actually do.

In short

The key points

Short on time? This is the bit that matters.

  1. 01

Measures your maximum rate of oxygen consumption

  2. 02

Shows the size of your aerobic engine

  3. 03

Best paired with a lactate threshold test

  4. 04

How close LT is to VO2 Max matters as much as the number itself

  5. 05

Built for amateur athletes with limited training time
